KET is an accredited training provider, offering two qualifications locally in Knysna — right where you are. The details of each course is described below. Download the application forms at the links provided or collect a printed application form from the KET offices. If a course is full, your application will automatically roll over to the next intake — we will let you know via WhatsApp.
Early Childhood Caregiver (NQF Level 1)
This course is open to anyone working in or interested in early childhood care. No previous qualifications are needed — just the ability to communicate in English.
How it works: The course runs over three months, with one full week of training in our Training Centre each month. A fourth week is available if you need extra time to complete your Portfolio of Evidence.
Assessment: Portfolio of Evidence (POE) and Practical Assessment
Cost: R7 000 — with monthly payment options available. Bursaries can be applied for, though they are not guaranteed.
Places: Limited to 20 learners per course. Two courses offered per year.
Current intake dates: Applications for the March 2027 course will be open between January and February 2027.

Occupational Certificate: Early Childhood Development Practitioner (NQF Level 4)
This is a nationally recognised qualification for practising ECD practitioners who want to take their career further.
How it works: The course runs over 12 months, with approximately one week of in-centre training per month (13 weeks in total). You will also complete a six-month workplace practical placement — meaning you learn while you work.
Entry requirements: Grade 12 or equivalent, with a good level of English and Mathematical Literacy. Instruction is in English only.
Assessment: Independent External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA) on completion of the course.
Cost: R25 000 — with monthly payment options available. Bursaries are allocated to deserving and committed applicants, though they are not guaranteed.
Places: Limited to 25 learners. One course offered per year.
Current intake dates: Applications are open for the 2027 intake and will close 15 November 2026.

The Learning Tree
The Learning Tree is KET’s model preschool, located in Khayalethu, an informal settlement in Knysna. It serves as a demonstration site for quality early childhood development practice and provides a space where student teachers can complete their practical training.
