Working in an ECD centre means wearing many hats. Teacher, caregiver, cook, administrator, mentor, social worker and more. Often with limited resources, you continue to show up for children and families every day. We see that.

We want you to know that feeling overwhelmed is not a sign that you are failing. It is a sign that you are carrying something genuinely heavy, with remarkable commitment.

If you sometimes feel like the weight of it all is too much, you are not alone. Here are some practical ways to manage it:

Break it down. When everything feels urgent, nothing gets done well. Write down everything that is on your mind — then sort it into three categories: what must be done today, what can wait until this week, and what can wait until next month. Tackling one thing at a time is not slower — it is smarter.

Name what you are feeling. Sometimes overwhelm builds because we do not stop to acknowledge it. Simply saying — out loud or in writing — “I am feeling overwhelmed right now because…” can take some of the power away from the feeling and help you think more clearly.

Ask for help. This is easier said than done, but it is essential. Whether it is asking a colleague to cover a task, reaching out to your KET Preschool Area Lead, or talking to a trusted friend — you do not have to carry everything alone. Asking for help is a sign of good leadership, not failure.

Protect small moments of rest. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Even five minutes of quiet — a cup of tea before the children arrive, a short walk at lunchtime — can reset your nervous system and help you face the rest of the day with more patience and clarity.

Know your triggers. Over time, try to notice what situations or times of year tend to send you into overwhelm. Month-end admin? Inspection season? Parent meetings? When you can see it coming, you can prepare — and ask for support before the wave hits.
