LET’S KEEP MOVING!

Thank you to the 41 preschools that took part in the recent ECD4AFRICA Training. Using sports and games is such a great way to create a lively learning environment and keep everyone motivated. We have made the implementation of this programme as easy as possible by integrating it with our KET Curriculum weekly lesson planning.

Why should you keep implementing the training you received?
Each time you run these activities, you are supporting your learners to become school ready.

Benefits:

1) Children will get better at moving, understanding bodies more.

2) The programme helps them learn to cross their bodies’ center, understand where they are in space, and improve their movement skills.

3) They will think in steps and learn cause-and-effect while they play.

4) You can make a difference without spending much money by using everyday items as tools, making the programme easy and cheap for everyone.

By continuing to implement this training, you’re setting the foundation for a lifetime of growth, learning, and development. Please send us some pictures of your learners experiencing the programme. We would love to see it in your classrooms!

LET’S INVOLVE PARENTS!

It’s very important to encourage parents to take part in their children’s learning. When parents see what happens at preschool and how their child is learning new skills, they can better understand the importance of sending them every day, and recognise the value that you bring to their lives.

There are many ways to invite parents to get involved, such as parent evenings, open days, and fundraisers.

This month, Tiny Treasures Daycare in Wittedrift held a successful open day, where 16 parents visited during regular preschool hours. They had the chance to see what their children do each day. Parents learned about the programme the SmartStart franchisee follows, and explored the classroom. They even joined in on activities, helping the children learn through play.

When parents know what their children are doing at preschool, they can help support their learning at home. We encourage every facility to get parents more involved!

JOLLY JUNIORS EARNS DBE REGISTRATION

Congratulations to Jolly Juniors! ECD facilities that are registered with the WCED are compliant with the Children’s Act of South Africa. This means they have the infrastructure and planning in place to ensure the children in their care are in an environment conducive to learning.

Besides being required by law, there are benefits to registering your ECD facility. Registered facilities that also register as a non-profit organisation may qualify for government funding. This will help you pay for education equipment, a portion of salaries and feeding the children.

If you are in the process of registering your ECD facility, we encourage you to keep going! It may seem like a lot of work but it is worth it for the sustainability of your small business.

ELOM ASSESSMENTS IN OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER 2024

We are currently visiting select preschools to conduct ELOM assessments with 4-5 year old and Grade R children. This standardised method for evaluating children’s development will help us determine whether they are on track for their age, or if they need extra support to meet developmental standards.

The information we gather will guide our programmes and help us ensure that resources are allocated where they are needed most. Additionally, these assessments allow us to better understand the overall effectiveness of different programmes and identify any risk factors impacting the children. By participating, you are helping us ensure that each child receives the support they need to thrive.

We look forward to sharing our findings with you!

PRACTITIONER TIP OF THE MONTH

Teaching Responsibility Through Everyday Tasks

Incorporate small, manageable tasks into your daily routine to teach children the value of responsibility. Simple activities like tidying up their play area, distributing materials, or helping to water plants can make children feel empowered and develop a sense of ownership over their environment. Encourage them to take pride in their contributions and celebrate their efforts, reinforcing that responsibility is a key part of being a team player and growing into confident, independent individuals. Remember, responsibility starts with small steps.

At The Learning Tree, teacher Ronalda moves the butterfly to show who is the helper of the day. The helper wears a necklace to show their responsibility.

PRACTITIONER’S WELLNESS

Cultivate Responsibility by Setting Boundaries

As educators, it’s important to model responsibility not just in the classroom but also in how we manage our own well-being. This means setting healthy boundaries between work and personal time. Take responsibility for your wellness by ensuring you’re not overloading yourself. Delegate tasks when necessary, take breaks, and prioritize self-care. By managing your time and energy wisely, you’ll be better equipped to serve your learners and stay energized throughout the school year. Remember, self-care is a responsibility too.
