A Fresh Start for Isiseko Educare Centre

On the 25 October 2025, the wet weather could not dampen the excitement in Dam-se-Bos as Isiseko Educare Centre officially reopened its doors with a brand-new building — marking a hopeful new chapter for early childhood education in the community.

Just a year before, in October 2024, the future of Isiseko was uncertain. The old building had deteriorated beyond repair. It was damp, moldy, and unsafe, with walls threatening to collapse. Closure seemed inevitable. But Principal Brenda Somerset, who has led the preschool for 19 years, refused to give up on the children who rely on Isiseko for learning, care, and a nutritious daily meal.

Recognising Isiseko’s vital role in the community, the Knysna Education Trust stepped in to help. With dedicated teachers and a strong early learning foundation already in place, KET was determined to ensure that this preschool would not close. Fundraising efforts began immediately. With various donations from individuals and a significant contribution from Thesen Island Home Owners Association, KET secured R400,000.

Breadline Africa then partnered on the project, bringing the funds raised to over 1 million Rand. They managed the complete rebuild, bringing Principal Brenda’s dreams into reality.

The reopening was a heartfelt celebration of community resilience and collaboration. Knysna Executive Mayor, Thando Matika, shared his personal connection to the preschool, while Captain Ferdinand Eyssen of the Knysna Police Station emphasised the importance of creating safe, nurturing environments for children to grow and thrive.

Today, 77 children can once again learn, play, and dream in safety; giving them the strong foundation they deserve as they prepare for Grade R and beyond.
