Learning and experience

We pay close attention to our experiences in the field and are committed to documenting and sharing what we learn through implementation.

Why we share what we learn

In South Africa, the early childhood development system is still being built — and it is being built largely on the ground, in thousands of small centres doing the work long before policy reaches them. That makes the experience of implementers some of the most valuable evidence we have. What works in an under-resourced centre, what doesn’t, and why, is knowledge that too often stays local and is lost. By documenting and sharing our implementation experience — the successes and the hard lessons both — we help others avoid the same costs, and we give policymakers a clear, honest view from the ground. Advocacy and shared learning are how the work of one centre becomes the practice of many, and how what we do today shapes what our country chooses to do for every child.

Preparing Parents for Grade R

Many parents aren’t fully prepared for their child’s move into Grade R, so KET now reaches them a year earlier.

This year, around 120 parents joined our five Grade RR Parent Meetings, almost twice as many as last year.

They left knowing how to support their children at home and what to expect when school begins.… Read more

Small Grants, Big Steps Towards Registration

For a small ECD centre, a failed inspection can set it back for years. This year, KET’s Small Infrastructure Grant invested close to R900,000 to help 26 Knysna centres fix fences, kitchens, toilets, roofs and more. Now these centres are on the road to registration and the subsidy that keeps their doors open.… Read more

Head for Business, Heart for Children

Forty of our partner centre principals recently completed the Grow ECD Business Accelerator Course. Over three in-person modules, they worked through the practical and the personal — budgets, compliance, cashflow, and the harder question of who’s really in charge of their centre. They walked out with new tools, a new language, and the company of others doing the same work.… Read more
