“With nothing more than a handwritten sign tied to an electric pole, I opened my preschool.”
My journey began after I was retrenched. Neighbourhood children started coming to play in my yard every day, and I realised there was a real need for a safe, structured space for them. With nothing more than a handwritten sign tied to an electric pole, I opened my preschool.
Over the years, I studied while running the centre, often paying for my training from the small fees I collected. I have faced many challenges — compliance processes I did not fully understand, and closing during COVID when there was no income. In 2021, I started again with just two children. Slowly, we have grown to 17 children today.
I run Zanolwazi from a building that used to be my home and keep fees as low as possible for families who are struggling. My dream is to see Zanolwazi fully equipped, compliant, and able to offer Grade R one day.
