Hlalani Preschool
Hlalani, Knysna
Meet Poppy Salizwa
Principal, Hlalani Preschool
“My vision is a safe, fully equipped preschool where children can play, learn and thrive.”
My journey started at home, helping my mother run a small preschool. Later, I trained through South Cape College and gained experience at other preschools, which prepared me to lead Hlalani with confidence and care.
Hlalani began as a soup kitchen. The Hlalani area is an informal settlement in far-east Knysna, partly built on a rubbish dump, where many children had no safe place while their parents worked. Today, we care for 26 children — with one classroom for all ages, a bare yard, and minimal learning materials.
My vision is to grow Hlalani into a safe, fully equipped preschool with proper classrooms, a secure yard, learning resources, and even a garden — where children can play, learn, and thrive despite the challenges we face.
