The mathematics programme was successfully customised and piloted within 4 preschools during 2013. In January 2014 KET introduced the Numicon Mathematics programme to 31 affiliated preschools in Knysna and Sedgefield. Numicon was developed to teach children new ways of learning mathematics and is based on 16 years of research done in the UK. The programme uses methodologies that are suitable for young children and provides the sensory, hands-on experiences that enable children to build concepts and gain knowledge through their senses. The multisensory approach is well suited to the learning styles of young children. The feedback from the preschools has been extremely positive. Teachers find the programme easy to administer and the children enjoy working with it. Mathematics is a key element in the triad of basic skills required at ECD level together with literacy and life skills.
Funding is required for this programme to ensure the continuous support, training and development both in-centre and on-site. New teachers enter the preschools and new preschools affiliate with the Trust continuously. Regular on-site teacher interaction and training will ensure the programme is effectively implemented. As the children become more competent teacher training needs to keep pace in order to provide the necessary extension and more advanced concept development.
