Literacy and Numeracy Training

Creating an Essential Foundation for Learning

Unless children have been given sufficient opportunity to ‘learn to read’, they cannot subsequently ‘read to learn’.

KET’s literacy and numeracy programmes give children the fundamental tools for lifelong learning and progress.

FONIX Literacy Programme

Studies have shown that the best way to learn English is by being proficient in one's home language. The FONIX literacy programme focuses on entrenching the crucial foundations of emerging mother-tongue literacy in young children, using phonetic principles of language development. By implementing the programme at the right age, using the right equipment in the right manner, children are given the exciting opportunity to grasp literacy in a fun, engaging, and lasting way. This makes a significant difference in their lives. Literacy in South African preschools is beset with challenges around the number of languages, limited resources and at-home support. These challenges are exacerbated in poor households. KET’s FONIX programme gives children a critical foundation to reading for meaning and language development. The FONIX programme is used to teach all 11 official languages. A once-off classroom kit investment is the gift that keeps on giving.

KET has distributed over 290 FONIX and 143 NUMBA kits to affiliated preschools.

NUMBA Mathematics Programme

This fun and structured classroom programme uses a multi-sensory approach for children to explore 26 essential mathematical concepts. The programme covers 26 specifically designed, practical activities that encompass not only mathematical concepts, but enhance perceptual, fine-motor, and language development through sensory experience as they learn. Each activity is tailored to an individual child’s learning pace, giving every student a strong foundation for mathematical learning. NUMBA is based on the powerful Oxford University Press NUMICON programme. NUMBA has been developed for, piloted, and refined in our very own pre-schools in Knysna since 2012.

A 2019 survey showed children’s numeracy concepts improved by 37% when using the NUMBA mathematics programme.

"The children like to engage with the physical letters, to hold them. This is a great tool as they have turns to hold and play with them, they become familiar with them and start recognising the letters and their corresponding sounds."

"Numicon is definitely a tool where children learn the value and size of numbers. They love getting the pieces to fill-up the board properly and they enjoy packing the equipment away neatly. It is a great way to teach and observe which children understand size and space."
