Studies have shown that the best way to learn English is by being proficient in one's home language. The FONIX literacy programme focuses on entrenching the crucial foundations of emerging mother-tongue literacy in young children, using phonetic principles of language development. By implementing the programme at the right age, using the right equipment in the right manner, children are given the exciting opportunity to grasp literacy in a fun, engaging, and lasting way. This makes a significant difference in their lives. Literacy in South African preschools is beset with challenges around the number of languages, limited resources and at-home support. These challenges are exacerbated in poor households. KET’s FONIX programme gives children a critical foundation to reading for meaning and language development.
