Government Registration of ECD Facilities and Aftercare Programmes
Creating stable and safe ECD facilities – with the potential to grow and become sustainable.
KET provides on-site support, training, practical guidance, and infrastructure support to formal and informal preschools. The focus of this support is to help these schools successfully register with the Department of Basic Education by complying with minimum norms and standards. Registration also enables an ECD centre to legally operate within the confines of the Child Care Act and ensures legal health and safety requirements for childcare are met.
This is a daunting challenge for the majority of community-based ECD sites, as the cost of meeting the various requirements and regulations, while employing qualified teachers, can be financially and logistically unachievable.
With the help of targeted donor funding, KET is helping beat the national averages by ensuring ECD facilities achieve and retain their registration status annually. This programme includes capacity-building for principals and governing bodies to apply to government for funding through principal training workshops, on-site support and mentoring, and regular site visits. Principals are also kept abreast of legal changes or funding opportunities via the KET WhatsApp platform for principals.
