The Intensive intervention program is in full swing. We start with the 5th week of Therapy Groups on Monday the 7th of May. Our theme at the moment is My Body and not only are we learning the correct names for all our different body parts we also learn how to use and exercise our bodies. Sentences like: "I see with my eyes" and "I can run/jump with my legs" are used and taught to the children. We focused only balancing activities this week and practised how to walk on our tiptoes and how to walk heel-to-toe on a straight line. The children leopard crawled underneath a blanket to help with core-muscle strengthening and crossing the midline. During every session there is a fine motor activity to practise and develop pencil grip and pencil control. The children are all very proud of the Fine motor books.
We ended of the previous 3 weeks of therapy groups with giving each child their very own soft toy. Feelings was the theme of those weeks and we discussed healthy ways on how to handle feelings like sadness, anger, happiness and of being afraid. The boys and girls were ecstatic about their gifts. To some of these children this is the first soft toy they receive and the privilege to choose it for themselves.
It is wonderful to see how excited the teachers are to join and learn from our therapists and the therapy groups.
The Intensive intervention Program (IIP) is headed by Lene Bouwer from Knysna Education Trust.
