This project assists towards payment of a child’s education and thereby ensures that children that are at risk, such as AIDS orphans, or children of HIV/AIDS infected parents, children in family foster care or those from single parent families and unemployed parents, also have the opportunity to attend a quality school.
Studies in the USA over 40 years indicated that children who had previously attended preschools showed greater academic achievement in their later high school careers, fewer high school dropouts, less unemployment and higher earnings by age 19, less delinquency, few encounters with the criminal justice system, fewer teenage pregnancies, and a greater likelihood of attending church. They usually had steady jobs, did not need welfare grants and often owned their own homes. Studies in South Africa have shown the same results. Added to the above positive behaviours, children in this country who attended preschool are also less likely to vandalise infrastructure.
The Adopt-a-Child’s Education programme costs R140 per child per month or R1 680 per year to educate, care for and monitor the children. In all cases parents are obliged to pay at least a small portion of the monthly fee. Where they are unable to pay they provide services to the school in the form of maintenance, painting work, gardening, etc. The principals and teachers identify the most needy of the children, which is then verified by the KET fieldworker. Once the sponsor has pledged his/her support for a child’s education, and the fees are received by KET, a child is allocated to the sponsor. A photograph and history of the sponsored child is forwarded to the sponsor. A sponsor receives quarterly reports on the child’s progress in all developmental areas –emotional growth, fine and gross motor development, cognitive and social development.
A sponsor may choose to develop a relationship with their sponsored child, remembering birthdays, sending gifts, letters, etc., or may prefer to remain anonymous. Currently we have 297 children sponsored. The goal is to achieve sponsorship for 500 children by January 2015. Don’t hesitate to change a child’s life today and give them an opportunity at a quality education.
