Thank you Garden Route Children's Trust!
Knysna Education Trust had a great start to 2015. The official beginning of first term for all affiliated preschools was on Wednesday the 21st of January. By the end of January we had presented two principal meetings in both Sedgefield and Knysna. Our Numicon refresher workshop at the beginning of February was well attended with great enthusiasm and imput from our affiliated preschool principals and teachers. We look forward to again hosting monthly informative and fun workshops and training sessions in Knysna and Sedgefield.
"We had such fun at Sunrise last week! Nandi asked whether I could assist with the Autumn theme, which I was happy to do. Apart from the usual shapes and colours, I took along baskets full of lovely autumn leaves gathered at Belvidere and Lake Brenton! We pretended we were trees that were dropping their leaves. The children had such a wonderful time!"
Knysna Education Trust is able to support a host of preschool teachers and children as a result of wonderful women like Anne who, once a week, devote their personal time to assist with furthering the education of young children. Volunteers truly are the life blood of the Trust. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers for making such a wonderful contribution to our children's future!
"The children at Humpty Dumpty seem to love Numicon and are enthusiastic about trying each step, moving swiftly through the worksheets. Each visit shows them more confident with the colours, shapes and numbers and anxious to work as quickly as possible for the coveted 'high five'. They are focused and concentrate very well, with two of the girls well out in front and itching to help their friends. The learning by play method seems to be working well." Volunteer Kathryn Jackson
In January 2014 KET introduced the Numicon Mathematics programme to 31 affiliated preschools in Knysna and Sedgefield. Numicon was developed to teach children new ways of learning mathematics and is based on 16 years of research done in the UK. The programme uses methodologies that are suitable for young children and provides the sensory, hands-on experiences that enable children to build concepts and gain knowledge through their senses. To date the Trust has trained 77 practioners and 11 volunteers. The feedback from the preschools has been extremely positive. The teachers are finding the programme easy to administer and the children are thoroughly enjoying working with it. When asked to pack away one reluctrant group begged for more time "nog net een keer juffrou-asseblief!" This is extremely gratifying and makes the effort that has been put into this amazing programme worthwhile.
