Each service provided by the Trust aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning for young children.
1. Early Childhood Development Capacity Building for qualified and in-training Teachers and Principals
The Trust has found that a gap exists between the theoretical training provided by training institutions and its practical implementation. Training in a second and sometimes third language, a lack of educational resources as well as catering for the needs of multilingual learners, often add to teachers’ difficulties. Teachers receive formal training and onsite mentoring in the Knysna Education Trust Teacher Capacity Building programme, (A KET developed program registered by the Department of Social Development), to ensure good quality practical implementation of lessons in the classrooms. Training is also delivered in Xhosa and Afrikaans to support teachers' success. The program is also aligned with the National Early Learning Development Standards (NELDS) and Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS).
2. Certified FET (Further Education and Training Early Childhood Development) Teacher Training
This service is critical to teachers' development and employment as the Department of Social Development and Education require all practioners working with children to hold formal FET accredited qualifications. The Trust will operate as a satellite training facility in Knysna that will make high quality certified teacher training available to all practitioners in the greater Knysna area. Training will be provided in the mother tongue.
3. Certified Caregiver Training- first 1000 days
The first 1000 days of a child's life is regarded as the most critical to a child's successful future development. The Trust focuses on developing the knowledge and skills of the Caregiver through certified FET (Further Education and Training) programmes delivered in practical training sessions. This programme will also be offered to new and young mothers.
